For the 5th year running Garforth Lions are providing hi vis vests to schools in the district. The vests are for pupils starting school in September in Reception or Year 1 classes.

A lorry fire on the A1 between junctions 44 and 45 around 5.30am on Monday, closed the motorway for a number of hours. The lorry was almost completely destroyed in the blaze.

29/07/2021 Covid Ravaged Care Home Told to Improve
A care home that has recorded more Covid-19 deaths than any other in Yorkshire was told by the CQC that it needed to improve its services just days before the first lockdown. Colton Lodges Care Home, a 138-bed care home providing specialist dementia care to residents aged 65 and over, saw 31 residents die with the virus during the first year of the pandemic.

28/07/2021 Critical HS2 Report Threatens Yorkshire Leg
Government advisers have stoked renewed fears over HS2's Yorkshire leg after a report branded the eastern phase from Birmingham to Leeds as "unachievable" in its current form. The high-speed rail project's eastern leg received a "red" rating in a paper quietly published on July 15 by the Infrastructure and Projects Authority, which advises the Government on major projects.

Leeds recorded 5,159 cases of Covid in the seven days to 16th July, a rate of 650.5 per 100,000 people. Of the worst hit areas of Leeds Kippax East, Micklefield and Allerton Bywater was 6th with rates of positive Covid cases rising by 100%, from 374.8 to 749.5 per 100,000

Outer East Leeds Neighbourhood Policing Teams, conducted targeted patrols on Friday with West Yorkshire Police Mounted section, at the RSPB Nature Reserve in Swillington. A number of people were spoken to regarding anti-social behaviour and the dangers of open water swimming.

10/09/2016 Local Airportís Charter Flights Plan
The owners of the Leeds East Airport at Church Fenton, Tadcaster, have applied for an operator's licence by the Civil Aviation Authority. The airport plans to offer up to four flights a day to Cannes, Faro and Malaga from May 2017. Residents have raised concerns over aircraft noise and an increase in traffic congestion. A spokesman for the airport said there were no plans to introduce scheduled flights but the airfield would concentrate on a limited number of "VIP service" charter flights costing around £1,000 per person for a return ticket.

11/12/2012 Chequers To Open on Sundays
The Chequers Inn at Ledsham is to open on Sundays for the first time in 180 years. The inn, which dates back to 1540 was banned from serving on Sunday by the lady of the manor after a lady returning from church was verbally abused by drunken farmhands. The landlord has tried to open on a Sunday in the past but the estate owners always refused. However the estate changed hands 5 years ago and the new owners have had a change of heart.
