Due to lockdown/Covid easing measures being delayed Garforth Lions have taken the decision to cancel this year’s Garforth Gala. Stallholders will be contacted regarding a refund of fees in due course.

20/06/2021 Wartime Weekend Concerts
This weekend is Wartime Weekend at Lotherton Hall and today there will be two wartime concerts with vocalist Miss Marina Mae. The events will be performed in the formal gardens at 11am and 2pm.

19/06/2021 Fine to Walk the Dog
Leeds City Council has launched a public consultation to revise a current Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which currently bans dogs running free in several gardens and golf courses in the city. This includes the ornamental gardens at Lotherton Hall, Golden Acre Park, Horsforth Hall Park, Wharfe Meadows Park, Otley, The Hollies, Temple Newsam and Roundhay Park, where dog walkers must keep their pets on a lead or face a £100 fine.

18/06/2021 Aldi is Looking
Budget supermarket Aldi has announced it is on the lookout for 20 new store locations across West Yorkshire. Its list of target locations includes Garforth and Thorpe Park. Aldi, which now has more than 900 stores across the UK, is looking for freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for development. It says each site should be around 1.5 acres and able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with around 100 parking spaces.

17/06/2021 Grant to Protect Remote Areas
North Yorkshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner has been awarded £429,986 from the Home Office. It will be used to protect individual homes and farms in parts of Selby close to the border with West, South and East Yorkshire, and also includes a focus on using ANPR cameras to deter and detect potential burglars. The areas covered will be Carlton, Camblesforth, Hirst Courtney, Birkin and Hillam with around 1,600 households and 50 farms and small holdings eligible to receive the targeted support.

16/06/2021 Benefits of Solar Farm
The proposed Barnsdale solar energy park at Kippax approved by Leeds City Council last week will have the ability to generate enough electricity to meet the requirements of up to 12,000 homes, according to the developers. More than £800,000 of the revenues generated by Barnsdale will be directed into a community fund that will provide grants to support local community groups and voluntary organisations over its lifetime.

Mark Dobson who in 2014 introduced the pilot for the Managed Approach, (which allows sex workers to operate in non-residential parts of Holbeck without fear of arrest), when he was the authority’s executive member for Safer Leeds, has welcomed the council’s decision to scrap the scheme and called for a model of “intense policing” to help stamp out kerb-crawlers in the area.

15/06/2021 Local Firefighters Tackle Factory Blaze
Firefighters from Killingbeck, Moortown, Garforth and Leeds tackled a blaze at an empty factory in Seacroft on Sunday morning. The fire broke out at Agfa Graphics, in Coal Road, Whinmoor, with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service called at 8.43am. The printing plate manufacturing site closed down last year.

14/06/2021 Jeff is Walking for Lloyd
Sky TV presenter Jeff Stelling will be doing his fourth charity walk for prostate cancer this year. He will dedicate the walk to Lloyd Pinder of South Milford who died of the disease last year aged 43. Lloyd joined Jeff on his very first walk back in 2016.

There will be a show at Lotherton Hall at 2pm on 16th June with Tayo Aluko featuring songs, poetry and prose. The performance will be outdoors in the walled garden and will have limited seating available.

13/06/2021 Solar Farm Approved
Leeds City Council ’s City Plans Panel approved plans put forward by Banks Renewables for a 40 megawatt capacity photovoltaic park, to cover 87.7 hectares – or 216 acres – of land on a site off Barnsdale Road in Allerton Bywater.

10/09/2016 Local Airport’s Charter Flights Plan
The owners of the Leeds East Airport at Church Fenton, Tadcaster, have applied for an operator's licence by the Civil Aviation Authority. The airport plans to offer up to four flights a day to Cannes, Faro and Malaga from May 2017. Residents have raised concerns over aircraft noise and an increase in traffic congestion. A spokesman for the airport said there were no plans to introduce scheduled flights but the airfield would concentrate on a limited number of "VIP service" charter flights costing around £1,000 per person for a return ticket.

Home delivery company Expert Logistics has opened a new distribution centre in Garforth creating 70 new jobs. The Crewe based company, which delivers white goods, was assisted in finding a suitable site by Leeds City Council’s property location service.

Sherburn based bus manufacturer Optare has secured a £3.3 million order for 33 buses from transport giant Stagecoach. The vehicles will be delivered in 2013.

Sherburn in Elmet bus builder Optare has won a £6.2 million contract to build 50 buses for Arriva. Unfortunately none of the new buses will come into service in this part of the country

11/12/2012 Chequers To Open on Sundays
The Chequers Inn at Ledsham is to open on Sundays for the first time in 180 years. The inn, which dates back to 1540 was banned from serving on Sunday by the lady of the manor after a lady returning from church was verbally abused by drunken farmhands. The landlord has tried to open on a Sunday in the past but the estate owners always refused. However the estate changed hands 5 years ago and the new owners have had a change of heart.

The Aagrah restaurant in Garforth is one of a hundred restaurants nationally that have been shortlisted for the 2012 British Curry Awards. The results will be announced at a dinner in London on 26th November. More than a quarter of a million nominations have been received from the public for nearly 4000 restaurants. Garforth based LNT has signed a 1.7 million pound three year deal with O2 to provide 1700 iPhones to its staff in order to improve communication with its workforce, particularly its care and construction workforces.

14/07/2012 Large Chinese Order for Ginetta Cars
Ginetta Cars have taken an order for fifty of their sports cars from a Chinese customer. This order will take up one sixth of the Garforth company’s annual production. The Chinese Olympic team and trade delegation officials have been based in Leeds in preparation for the Olympic Games
