22/08/2019 Burglar Caught in the Act
A teenager from Kippax who burgled the home of an elderly woman 2 weeks after she went into care has escaped a custodial sentence. Casy Foley was caught red handed at the house by police officers when a neighbour raised the alarm. Foley of Glencoe Gardens, Kippax admitted burglary and was sentenced to 12 months in a young offender institution, suspended for 24 months

21/08/2019 Miners Continue Bright Start to Season
The Miners were in league action on Tuesday night away at Knaresborough Town. Mark Simpsons' exquisite turn and shot gave Garforth a sixth minute lead, but a second half strike gave the home side a 1-1 share of the points.
Aberford is bracing itself for road restrictions relating to the annual Leeds Festival which takes place from 23rd to 25th August. Traffic is directed to approach Bramham Park via the A1. The A64 has drop off and pick up zones and becomes one way from 9pm on Sunday evening until about 3pm on the Monday with the Fox and Grapes to the A1 closed to traffic travelling eastbound from Leeds to York
20/08/2019 Sherburn High Celebrate Exam Results
Sherburn High Post 16 students are celebrating with 98% of students passing their course; over a third at A* – B and 72% at A* – C. Assistant Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form, Dan Kirby was really pleased with the results saying “Our students have worked incredibly hard over the past 2 years and it’s fantastic to see them reap the rewards”

Garforth Amateur Dramatic Society’s next production will just be 2 nights and will be performed on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th November 2019. One night will consist of “Austensibility” (a rehearsed reading in costume based on Jane Austen’s life, devised and written by Alan Richardson from Jane’s diaries, letters and excerpts from her writings). The other night will consist of “What The Dickens?!“, (a rehearsed reading also in costume, based on the life and works of Charles Dickens, devised and written by Erica Nicholls). Doors open at 6.45pm and the performance starts at 7.30pm

Allerton Bywater cricket club have five games left to play this season and are struggling to get 11 players each week due to work commitments and holidays. Their youngest player is 13 years old and the oldest is 61, so varied ages. They play with plenty of spirit but batting is a let down, they have lost 4 games by about 20 runs. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Road Championships is a yearly event that takes place every September and in 2019 it is to be held in Yorkshire. It will feature 12 races over 9 days, passing through Hillam, Monk Fryston, South Milford and Sherburn.

Vintage Weekend at Lotherton Hall takes place on 17th and 18th August from 11am to 4pm each day. Usual admission fees for Lotherton Hall apply each day. There will be up to 25 stalls of genuine vintage fashion, homewares, small furniture, jewellery, records and collectables from the 1920's to the 1980's spread throughout the grounds, also live music from The Pretend Beatles, a handful of classic cars and games, as well as the vintage fair.

Comedian, singer and TV entertainer Tommy Cannon, of Cannon and Ball fame, will be opening the Sherburn Craft and Food Festival which takes place in Eversley Park on 24-26th August. With over 100 exhibits and attractions, there will be something for everyone, including live entertainment, children’s activities, a funfair, a vintage car and bike display. More than 50 major Leeds bus services will see routes altered for over a year due to changes to The Headrow. The major changes are coming into effect at the start of September ahead of £20 million plans for The Headrow. Local services affected include 19,19A, 173A, 174, 174A, X26 and X27. The newest Community Defibrillator at St Benedict’s church in Garforth will be installed, all being well, on Wednesday 28th August. It will have a personal dedication for Agnes and Peter Radford who bequeathed the parish a financial gift to pay for the life saving device.

Garforth Academy is ranked 6th out of the 38 secondary schools in Leeds in the Real Schools Guide 2019 , compiled by Reach's data unit, which aims to give a far more comprehensive picture than traditional league tables. The guide takes into account 51 different data points - including not just GCSE results and Attainment 8 scores but also factors like Progress 8, pupil-teacher ratios and absence rates. This year's results put Allerton High School on top as the best school in Leeds.

09/08/2019 Gymnasts Make Final
Sherburn Community Gymnastics Club has made it into the final of a brand new Building Futures Competition. The competition supports children in health, sport, education and the arts and is giving away over £1 million in total this year. In the final stages the prizes range from £5000 to £100,000. Local clubs Sherburn White Rose Juniors, Sherburn Community Gymnastics Club and 2434 Church Fenton Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets all benefited from the prizes presented in the last few months.

An art workshop will be held at The Old Girls School in Sherburn from 6pm until 8 pm on Thursday 15th August. The event costs £20. Participants don’t need to bring anything with them but it is recommended to wear something you don’t mind getting a bit of paint on – just in case. All the materials are provided and step-by-step tuition is included. Each participant will leave 2 hours later with a complete recreation of a Claude Monet landscape. 50 years ago this month Lotherton Hall was gifted to the people of Leeds by Sir Alvary Gascoigne. On this 50th anniversary, visitors will be able to find out more about the Gascoigne family and the decision to hand over Lotherton Hall to the public, by immersing themselves in a new exhibition called 'End of an Era'.

It has been confirmed that Osprey Lake at Kippax Park fishery has fallen to koi herpes virus KHV. The deadly virus can cause a 100 percent wipeout of carp stocks and has no known cure. .After a similar outbreak at the site’s sister Lapwing Lake last year, CEFAS has extended the site’s designation order in an attempt to limit the disease
07/08/2019 More Burglaries in Sherburn
Between 1am and 9am on 5th August, a burglary occurred at a property on The Fairway in Sherburn. The burglars snapped the lock on the rear patio door and conducted a tidy search of the downstairs of the property. They are believed to have been looking for the keys to a high value vehicle parked at the address. At this time, nothing appears to have been stolen. This report may be linked to the previous report on Braeburn Road, Sherburn.
06/08/2019 Road Works Week in Sherburn
North Yorkshire County Council will be carrying out road maintenance on Milford Road, Low Street and Finkle Hill throughout August. Work on Milford Road and Low Street to the junction with Aldi will take place between the hours of 7.30am and 6pm on 5th to 9th August. Traffic travelling north will be allowed through the site. Traffic heading south will be diverted via Sherburn bypass. The section from Aldi to the Finkle Hill will be done from 7th to 9th August over night between 6pm and 2am.
06/08/2019 Sherburn Burglary
At 4am on 5th August, a burglary was reported at a property on Braeburn Road in Sherburn. The burglars attacked and snapped off the door handles of the UPVC French doors gaining access to the property whilst the home owner slept. They searched areas on the ground and first floor before being disturbed and fleeing the property. No items were stolen. 05/08/2019 Miners Off to a Flyer
Garforth Town got their league campaign off to a perfect start against a new-look Handsworth side with a 3-0 home win. Although the Miners got off to a bright start, Handsworth looked the stronger side as the first half progressed, until Garforth got their first goal on thirty seven minutes. A second goal just four minutes after the break confirmed where the points were heading. The victory was a boost ahead of next week’s tricky FA Cup tie at Shildon

The next Garforth Social will be on Monday 12th August, 1.30-2.30pm at Garforth Library, and will be a summer singalong featuring Garforth Ukulele Players (GULP!). GULP! will be performing a range of classic songs and nursery rhymes. No booking is required and there will be refreshments available.
Between 7.30am and 5.15pmon 2nd August, a burglary occurred at a mid-terrace property on Ash Grove in Church Fenton. Entry was gained via an insecure ground floor kitchen window and items including jewellery and cash were stolen. The offender left using the rear kitchen door which had the key left inside the lock. Garforth Town play away at Shildon in the extra preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday 10th August, kick off at 3pm. Shildon AFC was established in 1890 and play in the Northern League Division One in County Durham.

More than 37,000 complaints were made about the state of roads in Leeds between 2014 and 2019. The highest number of complaints was in Harewood ward where 2,376 complaints were made. In Garforth and Swillington there were 1029 complaints and in Kippax and Methley ward 653 complaints

A vicar’s cat from Garforth ended up on a road trip through France after she accidentally became a stowaway. Eight-year-old Squish travelled to France after hiding in her owners' caravan as they packed for their summer holiday earlier this month. The Rev Jane Brown, vicar at St Mary's Church in Garforth, discovered her when they got off the ferry in France. They had get Squish a pet passport, a rabies shot and extend their holiday for 3 weeks whilst the cat was in quarantine.

30/07/2019 Paedophile Jailed for 13 Years
69 year old Malcolm Church of Coronation Avenue, Kippax was jailed for 12 years and nine months after pleading guilty to two offences of rape and two of indecency with a child. The crimes took place in the mid-1980s when the girls were aged 12 and 14.
30/07/2019 Parish Hall Closed for Repairs
St Benedict’s parish centre will be closed from Thursday 25th July to Friday 2nd August for routine maintenance. This is a part of a schedule of maintenance across the church, parish centre and grounds in the coming months.
