19/04/2024 Drug Addict Sentenced
A desperate drug addict stole a ?17,000 road-rolling plant machine and then led police on a chase around Garforth. Simon Pickard was seen loading the vehicle into a Ford Transit on cloned plates after reversing up the track of a farm off Selby Road in Garforth. Police spotted the van on Bar Lane and turned to begin pursuing him along Aberford Road. He was caught on Collier Lane near Aberford where the police were able to stop him safely. He was given 16 months jail suspended for 24 months.

An ancient lead coffin which lay buried in a Garforth field for more than 1,600 years is set to be revealed to the public for the first time. It will be at Leeds City Museum as part of a Living With Death exhibition from May 3, 2024 until January 5, 2025 and is free to visit.

According to Government data for the academic year 2022/2023, 15 Leeds primary schools rated as outstanding. East Garforth Primary Academy, located in Aberford Road, East Garforth achieved the third highest grade with 91 percent of pupils meeting the expected standard.

13/04/2024 Aberford?s Leeds Festival Tickets
Applications for Aberford resident tickets to Leeds Festival 2024 must be submitted by 30th April. An application form can be downloaded from the Aberford Parish Council website. There are 130 tickets available, each valid for 3 days of the festival including camping. The ticket price is ?65 with two tickets allocated to each successful household.

12/04/2024 Shed Burglar Charged
A man has been arrested and charged over a series of shed and garage burglaries in the Kippax area at the weekend. Lewis Knight, aged 32, of no fixed address, appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court on Monday charged with four burglaries, three attempted burglaries, attempted theft from a motor vehicle, assault of an emergency worker and failing to provide a sample for a Class A drugs test.

A lane was closed on the M1 following a crash on Monday morning. One lane was closed on the M1 southbound between Junctions 47 and 46 following the collision at around 8.20am.

Black-necked Grebes are returning to RSPB St Aidan?s, which is home to 30 percent of the UK population. They are one of the rarest breeding birds in the country and the nature reserve is one of a handful of places where they nest regularly.

07/04/2024 Bridge Repairs
The railway bridge deck over the A162 London Road at Barkston Ash near Sherburn-in-Elmet requires upgrading following an assessment by Network Rail specialists. Replacing the bridge will also support the future electrification of the line. Construction teams will be working for eight days from 8am on Sunday 26th May to Monday 3rd June closing the A162 with diversions in place.

Garforth overcame a tricky first half to run out comfortable 5-1 winners on a sunny afternoon at Bottesford Town on Saturday. The win, coupled with Penistone?s defeat at Silsden, means that Garforth have confirmed their place in the play-offs. Second place is still withing reach, as Campion were humbled 4-1 at Rossington, leaving just one point between them and Town.

31/03/2024 Flooding Chaos as Water Main Bursts
There was an emergency road closure of the A63 at Garforth on Thursday when a water main ruptured and caused flooding at the Old George roundabout. Parts of LS15, LS25 and LS26 lost their water supply for a time but it has now been restored. The road surface on the eastbound carriageway is being repaired.

There is now a defibrillator in a cabinet outside the club house at Garforth Town FC. It is available for the whole community. Garforth Lions provided the cabinet and the football club supplied the defibrillator. The code is registered with the ambulance service.

Garforth Villa Football Club will be hosting their annual football gala on 22nd and 23rd June 2024 and this year they will be hosting it in Garforth. The gala is one of the best in Yorkshire, with over 150 teams, 1500 players and over 3000 people expected to attend over two days. Local businesses can advertise themselves from ?25.

Emergency services responded to a serious two-vehicle head-on collision on Astley Lane near Swillington at the weekend. The incident caused a complete closure of the road between Allerton Bywater and Swillington, close to the entrance of St. Aidens nature reserve.
