11/05/2021 Assembly Opens Soon
The new Assembly Bar on Main Street in Garforth is planning to open for the first time on Friday 21st May. Itís sister bar in Cross Gates has already reopened for outside customers but lack of outside space prevents them opening the Garforth bar for outside customers. The new bar caters for people willing to spend a little more on quality ales, artisan gin and cocktails.

Councillor Sarah Field retained her seat in Garforth and Swillington ward for Garforth and Swillington Independents with 3,780 votes, a 1,675 votes majority over second place Conservative candidate Mark Barratt.

10/05/2021 Stepping Out for Charity
The Revd Jane Brown at St Maryís Garforth has signed up to do the Christian Aid May Challenge, to walk 10,000 steps each day during May - a total of over 300,000 steps or about 150 miles. In the first seven days, Jane has managed 73,817 steps.

Council Leader James Lewis retained his seat for Labour in Kippax and Methley ward with 3,500 votes, a 1,112 votes majority over second placed Conservative candidate Connor Mulhall.

The next collection of donations at St Maryís Garforth for the Food Bank is on Monday 10th May, between 2pm and 3pm in the Church Car Park. Donations may also be dropped off before then to the box in the porch at The Rectory.

08/05/2021 Accident Closes M1
The M1 southbound between junction 47 at Garforth and junction 46 at Colton was closed on Thursday evening following a multiple vehicle road traffic accident. The police and ambulance services attended the accident. Traffic was diverted down the Ridge Road to the A63 and rejoined the motorway at junction 46

08/05/2021 Bank Holiday Market
Garforth Christmas Lights Committee have organised a May Bank Holiday Market on Sunday 30th and Monday 31st May in the car park behind Barclays Bank. The market is open from 10am to 4pm both days. The car park will be closed for parking on both days.

07/05/2021 End of an Era
Barclays Bank on Main Street closes its doors for the final time today. The nearest branches of Barclays will now be Leeds city centre and Castleford. However, customers can bank with Barclays via the Post Office on Main Street and also use the various cash points on Main Street.

07/05/2021 Kippax Defibrillators
Kippax Parish Council has approved funding half the costs of two new defibrillators along with Ward Councillors who are funding the remaining costs . The defibrillators have now been ordered and will be installed ASAP on the exterior of Valley Ridge Community Centre and the other one outside Moorleigh Care Home .

Polling takes place today for local councillors and for the new Mayor of West Yorkshire. Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm. Covid precautions are in place including social distancing, wearing of masks and individual pencils for voters

06/05/2021 Dead Man on Track
The closure of the railway line at Cross Gates on Bank Holiday Monday was because a man has died on the railway line at Cross Gates Station. Paramedics attended the incident but the man, whose death is not being treated as suspicious, was pronounced dead at the scene. Trains between Leeds and York/Selby were cancelled or delayed until all lines were reopened at around 2.30pm.

05/05/2021 Derailment Brings Rail Chaos
An engineering train derailed shortly before 3am at Church Fenton on Tuesday morning. This has resulted in huge delays on the rail network across Yorkshire, affecting Northern, CrossCountry, TransPennine Express and LNER services. Northern are warning that delays and cancellations are expected until midday on Wednesday.

DB3 Architects have relocated their offices from Monk Fryston Hall to South Parade in the centre of Leeds after 31 years in their Monk Fryston base.

04/05/2021 Incident Closes Rail Line
Trains between Leeds and York and Leeds and Hull were cancelled on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon due to the emergency services dealing with an incident at Cross Gates. A replacement bus service was put into operation to provide passengers with a service.

10/09/2016 Local Airportís Charter Flights Plan
The owners of the Leeds East Airport at Church Fenton, Tadcaster, have applied for an operator's licence by the Civil Aviation Authority. The airport plans to offer up to four flights a day to Cannes, Faro and Malaga from May 2017. Residents have raised concerns over aircraft noise and an increase in traffic congestion. A spokesman for the airport said there were no plans to introduce scheduled flights but the airfield would concentrate on a limited number of "VIP service" charter flights costing around £1,000 per person for a return ticket.

11/12/2012 Chequers To Open on Sundays
The Chequers Inn at Ledsham is to open on Sundays for the first time in 180 years. The inn, which dates back to 1540 was banned from serving on Sunday by the lady of the manor after a lady returning from church was verbally abused by drunken farmhands. The landlord has tried to open on a Sunday in the past but the estate owners always refused. However the estate changed hands 5 years ago and the new owners have had a change of heart.
