19/01/2021 Miners Football Suspended
Garforth Town’s fixtures are suspended until further notice following an announcement by the Northern Counties East League. Under the latest lockdown rules, teams must not arrange friendly matches or take part in training sessions. Further discussions are currently taking place with the FA to decide what will happen should the season not be completed.

Ian Metcalfe, former St Wilfrid's Church Warden and member of Monk Fryston Parochial Church Council, member of church community for over 50 years and Hillam News printer, has passed away at home.

18/01/2021 Three Arrested After Motorway Stop
Police stopped a car on Saturday on the southbound carriageway of the A1 near Aberford when the car came up as untaxed. Despite the occupants initially providing false details, further checks found that the woman driving did not have a valid driving license. Officers searched the car and found a large amount of money. The driver and the passengers inside were all arrested for money laundering. A further search carried out by Staffordshire Police at one of the detainee's homes found a cannabis farm. One of the male passengers was also wanted by The Metropolitan Police.

18/01/2021 Church Services Changes
St Mary’s Garforth have announced that in light of the renewed national lockdown, they have decided to suspend public worship for the time being, in order to keep the church and community members safe and to play their part in reducing the spread of COVID-19. This means there will be no Sunday or mid-week services held in the Church building, until the national lockdown is ended. Online and phone-in services continue.

17/01/2021 Farm Fire at South Milford
A number of crews and an aerial ladder platform (ALP) were called to attend to a fire in a large barn in South Milford, Selby at around 5.30am on Friday. The incident was scaled down at around 4pm.

17/01/2021 Garforth Food Bank Collection
The next food bank collection at St Mary’s Garforth will be on Monday 25th January, 2pm-3pm in the Church Car Park or drop-off to The Rectory porch before then.

16/01/2021 Burglary in Sherburn
Between midnights and 3.45pm on 12th January a property on Pinfold Avenue, Sherburn in Elmet was broken into. The burglars broke a lock of the downstairs window to gain entry, nothing is believed to have been stolen at this time. Police are appealing for anyone with any information or CCTV in relation to this burglary to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 ref 12210017306

16/01/2021 Bogus Police Officer Scam
North Yorkshire Police have received 6 reports from across the county where victims had received a call from a male claiming to be a police officer. In each report the name given by the fraudster and the force area they claimed to work from differed but the approach to the victim was always the same. The 'officer' would claim that they had a male in custody they believed to be the grandson/nephew etc of the person being called and that this person was in possession of their bank and credit cards. The person being called was asked to immediately call their bank or the police on 911 to verify this was genuine. This was when the potential victims realised the call was a scam as they were told not to necessarily wait for a dialling tone and to use the phone they were talking on.

15/01/2021 Fourth Best Covid Rates in Leeds
The coronavirus infection rate has begun to fall in Leeds for the first time since the third national lockdown was imposed. Among the Leeds areas with the lowest infection rates in the seven days to 6th January is Aberford, Barwick and Thorner which had 9 new cases in the seven days to 6th January – that is a rate of 139.6 per 100,000 people, down 55% from the previous week.

14/01/2021 M1 Closed After Crash
The M1 southbound was closed on Tuesday morning between junctions 47(Garforth) and 46 (Colton) following a crash. The M1 northbound was also stopped. The outside lanes in both directions were subsequently closed for central barrier inspections to take place.

14/01/2021 Witness Appeal for Road Accident
Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was seriously injured in a collision with a car in Austhorpe. The incident happened at 9.08am on Tuesday involving a black Ford Kuga, near to the junction of the A6120 Ring Road and Whitkirk Lane. The pedestrian was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance and is believed to be in a critical but stable condition.

Kippax and Methley Ward Councillors have donated a further £1500 to the Kippax Food Bank to add to their £750 donation they gave when the food bank started. This money will allow them to help people in need in surrounding villages. 13/01/2021 M1 Lane Closures Overnight
The M1 north and south bound carriageways between junctions 47 and 46 will have lane closures for barrier repairs from 7pm on 13th January to 6am on 14th January. Two lanes will be closed on the southbound and one lane on the northbound carriageway.

12/01/2021 Drive Thru
Hillam-based farm shop Bert’s Barrow have reopened their drive thru service during the lockdown. The farm shop was converted into the country’s first drive-thru overnight at the beginning of the lockdown last spring. They were awarded the Deliciouslyorkshire Lockdown Legends Award for services to their Local Community. The drive-thru will be open Thursday – Saturday from 9am-4pm.

10/09/2016 Local Airport’s Charter Flights Plan
The owners of the Leeds East Airport at Church Fenton, Tadcaster, have applied for an operator's licence by the Civil Aviation Authority. The airport plans to offer up to four flights a day to Cannes, Faro and Malaga from May 2017. Residents have raised concerns over aircraft noise and an increase in traffic congestion. A spokesman for the airport said there were no plans to introduce scheduled flights but the airfield would concentrate on a limited number of "VIP service" charter flights costing around £1,000 per person for a return ticket.

11/12/2012 Chequers To Open on Sundays
The Chequers Inn at Ledsham is to open on Sundays for the first time in 180 years. The inn, which dates back to 1540 was banned from serving on Sunday by the lady of the manor after a lady returning from church was verbally abused by drunken farmhands. The landlord has tried to open on a Sunday in the past but the estate owners always refused. However the estate changed hands 5 years ago and the new owners have had a change of heart.
