01/03/2021 Brown Bins Resume
Leeds City Council have announced that brown bin collections will resume on 22nd March. Due to the strain that Covid is putting on the collection teams, residents are advised that if a collection is missed, bins should be left out for a couple of days before being taken in in case the collection is late.

The police had to give out a few tickets to some vehicles around the junctions to St Aidens Nature reserve in Great Preston at the weekend because of dangerous parking at the nature reserve

28/02/2021 National Insurance Number Scam
West Yorkshire has seen a sudden rise in reports around a National Insurance number scam. Victims have reported receiving an automated telephone call telling them their “National Insurance number has been compromised” and in order to fix this and get a new number, the victim needs to “press 1 on their handset to be connected to the caller”. Once connected, victims are pressured into giving over personal details in order to receive a new National Insurance number.

27/02/2021 Bucking the Covid Trend
Official Government figures show that since mid-January the rate of positive Covid cases per 100,000 people in Leeds has been falling. It's now down to 167.4. But 17 Leeds areas have seen case rates double in the seven days to 18th February, compared to the previous seven days to 11th February. They include Kippax East, Micklefield and Allerton Bywater which recorded 11 new cases, that’s a rate of 164.9, up 120% from the previous week. Also, Aberford, Barwick and Thorner recorded four new cases, that’s a rate of 62, up 100% from the previous week.

27/02/2021 Council Offers More Grants to Businesses
Leeds City Council has announced details of additional funding support designed to help local businesses ride out the financial challenges posed by the Covid-19 crisis. One grant scheme will help eligible businesses with property costs such as rent, commercial mortgage payments and service charges. The council has also confirmed the continuation of support grants for businesses that were forced to close following the imposition of the current national lockdown on 5 January. 26/02/2021 Amendments Rejected
Proposed amendments to Leeds City Council’s budget for the coming year, from the Garforth and Swillington Independents group included scrapping bulky waste charges and removing the managed prostitution zone in Holbeck, instead spending the money on “a new approach to supporting prostituted women in the area”. All amendments, however, were rejected by the council’s majority Labour group.

25/02/2021 Leeds Festival to Go Ahead
The Reading and Leeds music festivals will go ahead in late August, organisers have confirmed. Stormzy, Post Malone and Liam Gallagher are confirmed acts to headline the twin events, which will run on the August Bank Holiday weekend from 27-29th August. It follows the publication of England's roadmap out of lockdown, which says the government plans to remove all legal limits on social contact by 21st June.

Kippax Councillors have written to Barclays Bank to try and save the branch on Garforth Main Street from closure. It is the nearest bank for residents of Kippax and Micklefield and the councillors fear closure will leave local people without any access to face to face financial services.

Harewood councillor Matthew Robinson has been selected as the Conservative candidate to be West Yorkshire’s first elected metro mayor. Councillor Robinson has been a councillor for the Harewood ward since 2010 and is also the shadow resources lead for the Conservatives.

23/02/2021 Ruby Keeps Calm
Twelve year old Ruby Nicholson from Garforth had to step in to complete a 999 call for her dad when he was unable to speak whilst calling an ambulance because he was having breathing difficulties. Ruby kept har dad and her little brother whilst they waited for a first responder to attend. Leigh Nicholson was taken to hospital and diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.

23/02/2021 Covid Email Scams Warning
North Yorkshire Police warn that a new scam email is circulating informing the recipient he has been shortlisted to receive a grant of £1million from the NHS. It continues “National Health Service is a Body of the World Health Organisation, This Covid 19/Covid Variant Health Grant is distributed to lucky individuals all from around the World and congratulation for been among the lucky ones enlisted to received this Covid 19/Covid Variant Health Grant.” It then asks for personal details. The scam is crude but underlines the need to be vigilant.

22/02/2021 Landfill Open for 12 More Months
Due to the slowing of waste inputs due to more waste being taken to incinerators and other waste streams not being available due to Covid It has been decided by Leeds City Council Planning dept after consultation with their legal department to allow a further extension of a further 12 months at Peckfield landfill. The site was due to stop accepting waste at the end of September 2020.

10/09/2016 Local Airport’s Charter Flights Plan
The owners of the Leeds East Airport at Church Fenton, Tadcaster, have applied for an operator's licence by the Civil Aviation Authority. The airport plans to offer up to four flights a day to Cannes, Faro and Malaga from May 2017. Residents have raised concerns over aircraft noise and an increase in traffic congestion. A spokesman for the airport said there were no plans to introduce scheduled flights but the airfield would concentrate on a limited number of "VIP service" charter flights costing around £1,000 per person for a return ticket.

11/12/2012 Chequers To Open on Sundays
The Chequers Inn at Ledsham is to open on Sundays for the first time in 180 years. The inn, which dates back to 1540 was banned from serving on Sunday by the lady of the manor after a lady returning from church was verbally abused by drunken farmhands. The landlord has tried to open on a Sunday in the past but the estate owners always refused. However the estate changed hands 5 years ago and the new owners have had a change of heart.
