18/10/2021 Mum Fined for Taking Son to Doctors
A single mum has been hit with a £60 fine after taking her son out of school for life-changing medical care. Tara Sharp flew nine-year-old Theo to Georgia, eastern Europe, for intensive treatment after he developed a number of persistent dangerous infections. Theo was taken out of Green Lane Primary Academy in Garforth for 14 days while the treatment took place in June and July. But the school maintains Tara should have waited for the holidays and handed her the £60 fine for unauthorised absence.

18/10/2021 Food Bank Collection
Donations of non-perishable food and toiletries may be dropped off at the St Maryís Garforth Church Car Park between 2pm and 3pm on Monday 18th October or left in the Box in The Rectory porch before then. The staff at the Food Bank are grateful for all the donations sent, as the need remains high.

Garforth Town hit eight past Glasshoughton in an 8-1 County Cup victory during the week. James Burgess hit 5 goals with Haas Gorji scoring two and one from Kevin Terheardt. This was the Miners biggest win in 23 years

Garforth NET (Neighbourhood Elders Team) are setting up community connections cafes including one in Kippax Methodists every Thursday from 10am to noon, for everyone to meet up and find out information on local services. The first session is on 14th October. There will also be an information day at Kippax Methodist Church on Thursday 2nd December from 10am to 2pm

14/10/2021 Leading the Way in Covid Outbreak
Leeds recorded more than 3,000 new Covid cases in the week to 5th October. The area with the highest case rate is Kippax East, Micklefield and Allerton Bywater, with a staggering case rate of 1,054.2 per 100,000 people; followed closely by Garforth South, Swillington and Little Preston, with a rate of 967.5.

13/10/2021 Man Attacked on Lines
A young man was mugged and robbed at knifepoint last Friday at around 10.30pm on the Lines near Garforth. The attacker was white, around 5ft 8/9, wearing a hood and white trainers. Anyone able to provide information on the attacker should contact the police.

12/10/2021 Rare Bird Spotted
Around 1,500 people have visited St Aidans Nature Reserve after an extremely rare Long-toed Stint, a bird which has strayed a long way from its normal range, was found on Friday. The Long-toed Stint breeds in Siberia during the Northern Hemisphere summer. There have only been three previously verified occurrences in the British Isles.

10/09/2016 Local Airportís Charter Flights Plan
The owners of the Leeds East Airport at Church Fenton, Tadcaster, have applied for an operator's licence by the Civil Aviation Authority. The airport plans to offer up to four flights a day to Cannes, Faro and Malaga from May 2017. Residents have raised concerns over aircraft noise and an increase in traffic congestion. A spokesman for the airport said there were no plans to introduce scheduled flights but the airfield would concentrate on a limited number of "VIP service" charter flights costing around £1,000 per person for a return ticket.

Sherburn in Elmet bus builder Optare has won a £6.2 million contract to build 50 buses for Arriva. Unfortunately none of the new buses will come into service in this part of the country

11/12/2012 Chequers To Open on Sundays
The Chequers Inn at Ledsham is to open on Sundays for the first time in 180 years. The inn, which dates back to 1540 was banned from serving on Sunday by the lady of the manor after a lady returning from church was verbally abused by drunken farmhands. The landlord has tried to open on a Sunday in the past but the estate owners always refused. However the estate changed hands 5 years ago and the new owners have had a change of heart.
